Beginning April 1st, 2007 Open Burning Permits will be issued through the internet or by calling a toll free number. Traditionally permits have been issued from the local
DNR Field Offices using current weather information as the deciding factor on when to issue or not to issue permits. That daily decision making process will remain in effect at the local level however to make the
issuing process easier across the State the DNR has decided to begin issuing permits via the internet or toll call.
Local Law Enforcement, Fire Departments, or other Enforcement Agencies can seek information
on whether permits are being issued and to whom by checking with their area Dispatch Centers. All Dispatch centers are being provided information on how to check on permit status which should make it easier for
personnel in the field to find out if permits are being issued and if an individual has actually acquired a permit.
Open Burning Permits are required by law to burn natural materials whenever the ground is
not snow covered. Permits are not required whenever the ground has snow cover however again only natural materials may be burned. Permits are issued for grass clippings, leaves, brush, stumps and other natural
materials. Man made materials of any kind may not be burned under this permit system.
